Dirty Dozen chemicals in cosmetics to be avoided

15 August 2015
Did you know that average woman put some hundreds chemicals onto her body, every day. Just by using basic cosmetics.Check the info-graphic above (source Daily Mail ).
According to David Suzuki Foundation there are:
“about 10,500 industrial chemicals used as cosmetic ingredients, including carcinogens, pesticides, reproductive toxics, endocrine disruptors, plasticizers, degreasers and surfactants”
Quite scary! We can only imagine what that does to our skin, health and to the environment.  Usually when we face problems with hormones or any other sickness, we don’t necessarily connect it to the way we are living: what food we eat and what cosmetics we use. But actually it should be the first thing we should do.  Many health problems are connected to it. Although it is not possible to follow such amount mentioned above, the David Suzuki Foundation carried a survey and grouped  “Dirty Dozen” chemicals commonly found in cosmetics which you should definitely avoid (Click here for the full report, which is very well done and easy to read).
Dirty Dozen chemicals in cosmetics to be avoided:
  • BHA and BHT
  • Coal tar dyes: p-phenylenediamine and colours listed as “CI” followed by a five digit number
  • DEA-related ingredients
  • Dibutyl phthalate
  • Formaldehyde-releasing preservatives
  • Parabens
  • Parfum (a.k.a. fragrance)
  • PEG compounds
  • Petrolatum
  • Siloxanes
  • Sodium laureth sulfate
  • Triclosan
The info-graphic above also shows you the  dangerous chemicals, to which you should pay attention. It is a good picture also describing what we put on ourselves- not just a hairspray, but actually A few dozen of chemicals. Of course to look at this in a very detail way, I  should be a chemist. Nevertheless I search in order to educate myself.  I think it is important and we need to do it at least on the basic level. We all love new body creams, shower gels, shampoos, perfumes and lipsticks. I do as well. But since I started to live more consciously and I try to look into my health in a deeper, balanced way, I also started to limit chemical  products I use. Whenever possible, I replace it with natural choice. I have already a few favourite products (I will start to post reviews on the blog) and all the time I check the new ones and experiment.   It is quite difficult to give up all the chemicals which we are surrounded by, but at least we can try to limit them.
I think what is the most important is to understand the philosophy behind industries and corporations (including food production, pharmaceutical companies, cosmetics, etc): they produce things because they want to earn money. Not because they are necessarily good for you
or you need them. As simple as that. Despite the fact that I do believe we are living in a very beautiful time, where we can observe technology development and medical help reaching very high standards, we are also facing lot’s of challenges. Environmental and health issues are some of them just to mention. We are living in the time, where we all started to believe that processed food, chemical cosmetics, chemical drugs in the pharmacy-we all need it and it’s good for us. No, we don’t, and no it’s not good.
Choosing organic, natural cosmetics- it is a certain choice we can do, or at least we can try with some small changes. It is not completely possible to choose purely natural products all the time,as such cosmetics we would need to keep  in the fridge. There are brands that produce such, and it is worth to pay attention to them, but let’s be honest, they are not accessible to all.
What I did firstly, I replaced products which are the easiest to replace- body balms and  body scrubs, with completely natural solutions:
  • Instead of chemical body lotions I use mostly natural oils and I mix them with essential oils which I like: coconut oil with lavender oil, coconut oil with lemon grass or mandarin oil, grape seeds oil  mixed with essential oils.
  • You can also prepare amazing body pilings and scrubs just by mixing blended coffee seeds with oil and essential oils, prepare sugar scrub and salt pilings mixed with essential oils.
While changing the habits , I realize a few things. Our body quickly get addicted to strong fragrances and chemicals:
  • When I gave up chemical body lotions, firstly I had the feeling my skin was very dry. After some weeks, actually my skin rebuilt its natural lipid protection and the “dry” feeling disappeared.
  • after a while, I stopped accepting strong , artificial fragrances. Now the usual chemical shower gels or shampoos with strong, artificial fragrance are impossible for me to accept I am not able to use it any more.
  • I also started to use smaller quantity per use. I stopped being addicted to the feeling that you need lots of shower gel and foam in order to wash yourself
The most difficult for me is to find suitable face cosmetics, which would be natural and organic. I have quite problematic skin, and many of the cosmetics are blocking my pores, so I still experiment and search for solutions. You will hear them here on the blog. If I can replace even part of the chemicals with natural ingredients, I’m happy about it. Fortunately there is a wide range of products, which try to eliminate the most dangerous and allergenic chemicals. They include less chemicals, they are based on natural essential oils, herbal essences and extracts which  can really support our skin.Below, I put for you links to some of the companies, which I know or they were recommended by other blogers and users. Some I already tested, some I will try to test and check the ingredients. For the moment, I can not yet tell you which products are free from dirty dozen, but as soon as I will start to put some reviews, I will check them also accordingly. You can check the links, maybe check some products and if you will feel like, please share with me your favourite natural products. In that way, we can create a list of recommended more natural and organic cosmetics. I imagine not all of them will be free from Dirty Dozen. But at least we can eliminate some of the chemicals.

Well done Marta, this article is an eye-opener towards daily cosmetics. Although I do pay attention to what I eat and go for facial skin care only reffered to as dermocosmetics due to my demanding skin, I have neglected body lotions and shower gels’ ingredients so far. To be honest, my choice has always been driven by a strong fragrance, the more intensive, the better (especially coconut, macadamian, almond, to name but a few ;). Thank you for the list of companies, I will have a closer look to them and hopefully find something special for myself :)

    • Thanks for the comment Emilia! It’s true, sometimes we need to open our eyes and check what we buy. Unfortunately, we are surrounded by chemicals and addicted to many products which we don’t need. It’s a wider topic to discuss :) The companies I listed, I didn’t check them all yet, but it can be an inspiration. I will start posting the reviews of the products I already know. Even the companies which name themselves as natural, very often use lots of chemicals, so it is very important to always check the ingredients and be aware what chemicals are bad for us.

Among the enlisted companies, it was Lawendowe Wzgórze which attracted my attention mostly and their huge choice of soap products with special purposes, depending on their composition. They are supported by lots of positive comments from customers and I think these products might be worth trying. I look forward to your reviews! Good luck :)

        • Thank you Emilia!!! Yes, I think lately there are many Polish companies which offers lots of natural, valuable products with competitive price! I will start posting reviews!Greetings.
